Charities and Fundraising

Pupil Voice and House Charities

At Carleton House, our approach to charity and fundraising is deeply rooted in our mission, “We live, love and learn with Jesus,” and guided by the principles of Catholic Social Teaching.

Traditionally, Carleton House has supported a nominated whole-school charity, with past partnerships including Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, KIND, Ronald McDonald House and The Lily Foundation. This year, we strengthened pupil voice by inviting children to select a charity for each of our four houses. During a dedicated House Day, pupils came together to reflect, discuss and vote on causes close to their hearts.

Our chosen charities for this year are:

  • Madden House – South Liverpool Foodbank
  • Wills House – Alder Hey Children’s Hospital
  • Sampson House – Breakthrough T1 Diabetes
  • Johnston House – Zoe’s Place Children’s Hospice

We have been delighted to welcome visitors from each of our house charities into school, enabling pupils to hear first-hand about their vital work. Each charity receives 10% of all school and PTA fundraising, ensuring sustained and meaningful support throughout the year.

As a Catholic school we seek to support a wide range of local and global charities.

Charities are chosen based upon links within our school community and to the wider Catholic Church. This supports both our Carleton Charter and the inherent linked Catholic Social Teaching that flow through it. Our children are active fundraisers and our parents are both generous and supportive of the fundraising we aim to achieve.

Charity and the Liturgical Year

Our charitable outreach is closely linked to the liturgical life of the Church, helping pupils to live out their faith in meaningful and practical ways.

During Advent, we support Nugent through our annual appeal, encouraging pupils to give generously to those in need within our local community. In Lent, we work closely with CAFOD, supporting global communities through prayer, fundraising and action, including participation in initiatives such as the CAFOD Big Walk.

We also continue our long-standing Christmas traditions of supporting local charities, including preparing toy hampers for a local women’s refuge and donating essential items to The Whitechapel Centre to support those experiencing homelessness. In addition, the school community comes together to support national initiatives such as Children in Need and Red Nose Day.

Pupil Leadership in Action

Pupil leadership plays a central role in our charitable work. Our RE Ambassadors lead key initiatives across the school, helping to promote awareness and encourage participation.

They organise and lead the sale of poppies for the Royal British Legion in November and daffodils for Marie Curie in March, demonstrating commitment to service and remembrance.

We actively encourage and support our pupils to take the lead in fundraising initiatives. A successful example of this is a group of Year 5 children who independently chose to set up a toast sale at breaktimes, raising money for our four chosen house charities. This pupil-led initiative reflects their creativity, independence and strong sense of service.

Through these opportunities, pupils actively live out the principles of Catholic Social Teaching—showing solidarity, compassion and a deep understanding of their responsibility to care for others, both locally and globally.
